Iron River, Upper Peninsula of Michigan

A tough day. Ended with Sonia getting her foot caught in the back wheel of Dan's bike on a downhill, one mile from the day's destination. Threw the bike into a hard skid with the wheel locked up, loud blow-out of the tube and destroyed the tire. Sonia ok but shaken up. Helped by a great guy, Sheldon, who had a bike in the woods behind his house and gave us a tire off of it, but a little too big and tube wouldn't stay inside the tire when inflated. Waiting to see if we can get a tire at a hardware store or a bike shop 50 miles away. More from Dan, the writer in the family, later.
Love, Alison

Glad to hear Sonia's foot is OK, that could have been real nasty. Bikes, wheels spokes and tyres can be replaced, feet can not.

Sonia , did you measure the skid mark purely for bragging rights ? I think your Dad will need to buy you a new pair of cycling shoes.

Skidmark Award of the trip is currently held by Sonia. Gus the one in your undies dont count...

Oh my, I am so glad Sonia is OK. Sounds like that could have been a bad deal. Poor kid. I hope you find a bike shop soon. We'll be looking for an update. Chandra and the clan

Holy Helicopters Batman! Hope Sonia is okay. That sounds pretty scary. What a trooper! Hope you can get tires soon and return to the journey. Rob and Hannah home tomorrow. I don't think I'll ever hear the end of the Disneyland stories....

Sonia, you'll have a new story to tell your classmates when you get home! Wow, that must have been some skid to blow the tire and tube. Your foot may be sore for a few days, but thank goodness, no fracture. (Isn't it great to have your mom be a doctor?) I hope you can get the tire/tube replaced without too much inconvenience and time loss. Looking at the map, the towns through there are all small. Do they even have bike shops? Alison, Pauline Cleary lives in Manistique. If you can reach her by phone, I'm sure she would help you, if she can. Love, Mom
